Carrie Sampson Moore enters her 15th year as the director of physical education and wellness at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2017-18.

Her role at MIT includes implementing the instructional physical activity curriculum to complete the institute’s general institute requirement for more than 4000 undergraduate students annually. In Sampson Moore’s current role as Director of Physical Education, she is entrusted with taking the strategic direction and vision for physical education from concept to reality by providing leadership and development, curricular guidance, and facilitation and management of MIT’s comprehensive Physical Education program. In 2015, she was honored to join a four person U.S. delegation led by University of Minnesota Professor, Dr. Lili Ji, to share U.S. best practices in higher education physical education at five universities in China.

She completed her B.A. in Physical Education with a concentration in coaching in 1989, and in 2001, earned her M.S. in Kinesiology with a focus on sport management and sport psychology from University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus. In addition to her formal education, while in college, Sampson Moore also learned about team work and leadership by participating on a national level crew team that won the Head of the Charles in 1986. In November 2017, she received the "Distinguished Alumni Award" from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. 

Since completing her degrees, Sampson Moore has pursued professional work in higher education sport and fitness for the past 25 years. She has worked at three universities. Previously, she has held posts as an Assistant Director of the Aquatic Program at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (1991-1994), Program and Event Director at Miami University in Ohio (1994-2002), and served as the first Program Director for Recreational Sports at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2002-2005). On all three campuses, Sampson Moore assisted with opening new sport facilities, hired the first management and instructor teams, and developed both programming and a comprehensive special event calendar. Notoriety was brought to all three universities through national level aquatic events that were awarded through a bid process. Sampson Moore has also held dual roles as an instructor and administrator at all three institutions.

During her tenure at MIT, Sampson Moore has created and implemented several systems to efficiently manage the Institute’s large Physical Education Program. Importantly, Carrie led the development of a health and wellness curricula featuring stress management, meditation, nutrition, and sport nutrition. She also established an outdoor education curricula that takes students off campus to climb, ski, backpack, SCUBA, and kayak. As a boundary spanner, Sampson Moore works across campus with various academic departments and student life units to collaboratively develop credit and research opportunities. Sampson Moore has garnered nearly $450,000 of gifts and grants to support programming for students. She feels that the best part of her job is building systems and creating educational programs to optimize the experience of students, staff, and faculty.

Sampson Moore actively serves on the MIT senior management team, Departmental Advisory Board, and Faculty Council as management representative, as well as several division and departmental committees. A leader of change, she has chaired division and departmental technology initiatives as well as a division’s core values committee. Most recently, Sampson Moore has participated on the departments Integrated Data Committee, DSLx Committee, MIT’s MindHandHeart Core Team and also served as a mentor.

For the last 25 years, Sampson Moore has been a member and presenter for the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). She was also a member of the Society for Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) where she joined a task force to create a best practice document for instructional physical education in higher education. Sampson Moore is an active participant of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) and has served on the Board of Directors of NAKHE for the past eight years.

She enjoys sailing, cross-country skiing, running, biking, theater and travel.
