CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT men's volleyball team blanked local rivals Newbury College (25-8, 25-9, 25-11) and Emerson College (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) in a home tri-match on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Emerson defeated Newbury, 25-22, 25-18, 25-20.
No. 12 MIT def. Newbury, 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-11)
Freshman Jack Serrino (Glencoe, Ill.) amassed a .875 hitting performance by connecting on 14 of his 16 errorless attack attempts and added three blocks and two aces for MIT (7-1). Sophomore Sean Kropp (Fairless Hills, Pa.) produced 10 kills, a .467 hitting percentage, and two aces while senior Alex Klein (San Diego, Calif.) totaled eight kills, five digs, and three blocks. Sophomore Jordan Lucier (Torrance, Calif.) collected a match-high eight digs, followed by seven from classmate Martin Krasuski (Aurora, Ill.) who also posted five kills on six swings. Freshman Steve Lonhart (Santa Cruz, Calif.) dished out 21 assists as junior Brendan Chang (Laytonsville, Md.) tallied 10 assists, four digs, and two aces in the first set. Freshman Tom Leech (Meadville, Pa.) earned five aces while classmate Andrew Hall (Lynnfield, Mass.) chipped in two blocks.
Freshman Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) led the way for Newbury (1-5) with six kills as fellow freshman Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.) was next with three. Freshman Michael Holihan (Northampton, Pa.) registered 11 assists and three digs while classmate Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) paced the squad with four digs.
Emerson def. Newbury, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-20)
Junior Jackson Wiley (Los Angeles, Calif.) powered Emerson (3-4) with 16 kills, a .382 hitting effort, and nine digs while senor Connor Burton (Valencia, Calif.) registered 11 kills and a .733 hitting percentage. Freshman Nick Rusk (Weston, Fla.) notched 10 digs and six kills as classmate Stig Regan (Kailua, Hawaii) rounded out the front row with six kills and two blocks. Junior Brendan McGonigle (Los Angeles, Calif.) distributed 40 assists while junior Jared Gross (Wexford, Pa.) contributed seven digs.
Senior Chi Yin Li (Framingham, Mass.) generated 14 kills, a .370 hitting performance, 11 digs, and two aces for Newbury. Thorne added eight kills and eight digs while Robidoux tacked on six kills. Brown-Rose bolstered the back row with six digs as sophomore Nile Fox (Hampton, Va.) tacked on two blocks. Holihan rounded out the squad with 33 assists and five digs.

Klein racked up 14 kills, a .367 hitting percentage, six digs, and five blocks while Krasuski compiled 13 kills, a .667 hitting effort, eight digs, two blocks, and an ace. Serrino was a force to be reckoned with at the net as he totaled seven kills and nine blocks. Senior Andrew Busse (Mount Prospect, Ill.) bolstered MIT's outing with six kills and three blocks. Chang earned 37 assists while sophomore Suyash Fulay (Wexford, Pa.) collected seven digs.
Wiley finished with a match-high 15 kills as Gross led the way for Emerson with nine digs. Junior Ben Hillman (South Pasadena, Calif.) recorded eight digs while Rusk had four kills and four digs. McGonigle tallied 24 assists as Regan and Burton both put up two blocks.
Next up for MIT and Newbury are matches with local foes on Tuesday, Feb. 10. MIT will host Emmanuel College while Newbury will travel to Lesley University for a New England Collegiate Conference tilt. The next day, Emerson
