Men's Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

Lexington, Ky. (July 17) – For the tenth time in program history and for the third straight season, the MIT men's volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. In addition, the Engineers earned the Honor Roll Award as they produced one of the top-5 GPA's across all collegiate men's programs.

The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

MIT was one of 24 collegiate men's programs and one of 973 total programs (Division I, II, III, NAIA, Two Year, USCAA, High School and collegiate beach) from across the country at all levels to earn the Team Academic Award this spring. The Engineers represented Division III men's volleyball as one of seven programs to earn the award as Emerson College, Kean University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Stevenson University, Vassar College and Widener University were also all honored.

Of the five collegiate men's programs to earn the Honor Roll Award, MIT and Vassar College were the only two Division III teams on the list. The Engineers and Brewers were joined by Division I Harvard University and Saint Francis College as well as Division II Barton College as the top-5 team GPA's this spring.

The MIT men's volleyball team wrapped up its 2018 season with an overall record of 16-9 and a mark of 4-5 in UVC play. With 16 wins this year, the Engineers registered their 14th straight season with at least 15 victories. Additionally, MIT tallied four wins over nationally-ranked opponents including No. 7 NYU, No. 13 Wentworth, No.14 Eastern Mennonite and No. 15 Elmira under first-year head coach Todd Elwell.
