Wright and Wacker Lead MIT in 15-8 Win over Lasell

Senior Laura Wacker

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) racked up five goals and two assists while classmate Laura Wacker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added five goals to lead the MIT women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 victory over Lasell College on Thursday night. Junior Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) paced the Lasers (2-2) with two goals and three assists in the first meeting between both programs which saw the Engineers' record improve to 1-2 on the year.

Freshman Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) put MIT on the board with a free-position shot after six minutes expired which was quickly followed by a strike from Wright that was set up by sophomore Emma Kane (Garden City, N.Y.). Wacker extended the Engineers' margin on a free-position goal but Lasell replied with Wuorio lobbing a pass over the cage to freshman Lisi Anczok (Buffalo, N.Y.) for the score. Wright responded with three straight tallies to give MIT a 6-1 advantage with 11:27 on the clock. Despite the deficit, the Lasers continued to attack as they closed the half with their own three-goal spurt to narrow the gap to two (6-4). Wuorio earned assists on blasts by freshman Ashley Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.) while senior Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.) rounded out the run.

Wright set up the Engineers' first two goals of the second stanza as Wacker and DiDio found the back of the net during the first five minutes. Slattery's free-position shot brought Lasell within three (8-5) at the 24:51 mark, but this was as close as it would get as MIT outscored the visitors, 7-3, to close out the game.

DiDio and freshman Nadia Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) both finished with two goals while Kane had two assists. In addition to her game-high scoring performance, Wright tacked on seven groundballs and three draw controls as Wacker posted four groundballs. Freshman Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.) registered a goal, three groundballs, and three draw controls while classmate Paige Kennedy (Eastchester, N.Y.) totaled 11 saves and three groundballs for the Engineers.

Slattery compiled two goals, six groundballs, and two draw controls as Wuorio collected six draw controls. Brecher contributed two goals to the Lasers' cause while freshman Sammy Long (Staten Island, N.Y.) generated 11 saves.

Both squads return to action on Saturday, March 16. MIT will host the University of Maine-Farmington while Lasell will continue its road trip at Anna Maria College.
