Cambridge, Mass. (April 1) -- Over the 2020-21 academic year, the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) has established the DAPER Culture Committee, which consists of 10 DAPER staff members from throughout the various areas of the overall department. The co-chairs of the committee are Ali Lamothe, business manager for recreation, and Melanie Appleman, senior administrative assistant of intercollegiate athletics.
"While many aspects of our departmental operations were either significantly modified or paused this year due to Covid-19, it provided us a unique opportunity to use this time to assess and evaluate our culture within DAPER," said Dr. G. Anthony Grant, director of athletics/DAPER department head. "The work of the Culture Committee has served to not only provide recommendations to our senior leadership team for the development of our strategic plan, but has also been critical in our ability to galvanize the department in the midst of these extremely challenging times."
The committee was established in spring 2020 after MIT transitioned to remote learning in March, with the purpose of improving the DAPER culture while the community has been primarily remote. This was established in conjunction with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Community subgroups. The DEI group is chaired by Larry Anderson, while the Community group is co-chaired by Meg French and Anne Versprille.
"Being a part of the Culture Steering Committee over the past year has been an amazing experience," said Michelle Goodrich, who is a member of the committee and an MIT athletic trainer. "It has allowed me to connect with colleagues outside of my department in a way that I had not been able to in my previous seven years at MIT. I look forward to continuing to develop these relationships as the department works towards building a culture that unites our community."
