Sailing Finishes Third at Women's Team Race National Invite to Highlight Weekend for Engineers

- The Lead: The MIT women's sailing team highlighted this weekend's action with their impressive third place finish at the Team Race National Invitational held at Brown University. The nine Engineers who competed at Brown finished with a 13-6 record and were edged by Brown (17-2) and Dartmouth (14-5) for the team title.


- The women's sailing team had an extremely impressive showing at their Team Race National Invite this weekend which was held at Brown University. MIT finished in third place with an overall record of 13-6 and was edged by host Brown (17-2) and Dartmouth College (14-5) for the title. In round one, MIT went 9-3 with victories over Bowdoin (1-2-3), Boston University (1-3-5), Cornell University (1-2-6), South Florida (2-3-4), Harvard University (1-2-4), Northeastern University (1-2-3), Tufts University (1-2-4), Pennsylvania (1-2-5) and Brown (1-2-5). The Engineers advanced to the second round where they topped Brown (1-2-4), Cornell (1-4-5), Bowdoin (1-2-5) and Rhode Island (1-2-4) for a 4-3 record in the round and an overall mark of 13-6. The women's sailing team sent Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), Emily Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.) and Annie Hughes (Guilford, Conn.) to serve as the skippers and Sarah Caso (Duxbury, Mass.), Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii), Julia Cho (Cupertino, Calif.), Brooke McGoldrick (Southport, Conn.), Tiffany Xi (Foster City, Calif.) and Noa Yoder (New York, N.Y.) to serve as the crews. 

- At the President's Trophy, MIT finished fourth of seven teams with 195 points. In the A Division, Meredith Julian (Cohasset, Mass.) and Veronika Silkin (Johnston, Iowa) took fourth with 87 points, while Julia Wyatt (Sudbury, Mass.) and Isabelle Yen (Palo Alto, Calif.) finished fifth in the B Division with 108 points. Julian and Silkin won race number two and posted four top-5 finishes over the 14 races, while Wyatt and Yen had their best finish in race 13 when they crossed the line second.

- At the Oberg Trophy, MIT finished seventh overall with 206 points in the three division regatta. Stephen Duncan (Severna Park, Md.) and Lynn Liu (Orange, Calif.) claimed first in the A Division with 47 points edging out Boston College and Roger Williams. Duncan and Liu won race one and four and posted eight top-5 placements over 11 races. The B Division boat sailed by Alex Abate (Kemah, Texas) and Abbie Lee (Costa Mesa, Calif.) finished tenth with 82 points as they had back-to-back fourth place finishes in races seven and eight. The C division vessel sailed by Charles Lindsay (West Palm Beach, Calif.) and Mai Nguyen (Hanoi, Vietnam) took eighth with 77 points as their best race was number five when they crossed the line third.

- Finally, at the Thompson Trophy, MIT finished seventh overall with 326 points in the three division regatta. In the A Division, Trevor Long (Hockessin, Del.) and Kaila Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) finished third with 85 points as they posted five top-3 placements over 13 races. The B Division boat also finished third with 75 points as Ivan Shestopalov (Miami, Fla.) and Sameena Shaffeeullah (Danbury, Conn.) notched 75 points with their best race coming in number seven. Finally, James Peraire-Bueno (Bedford, Mass.) and Fiona McKellar (Palos Verdes, Calif.) finished 17th in the C Division to close out the highlights for the weekend.


- MIT will host the Midweek Firefly on Thursday, April 18 at 4:00 pm before the weekend begins with competition at the Reed Trophy at home, the Boston Dinghy Club Challenge Cup at Harvard and the Morris Trophy at Boston University.
