Engineers Compete in EARC Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. – On a sunny Sunday morning on Lake Quinsigamond, the MIT heavyweight crew team competed in the 2014 EARC Sprints Regatta. Tech entered two Varsity 8 boats and a Varsity 4 crew in the events for the day.

MIT's second Varsity 8 boat opened competition, racing in the second of three heats and completing the course in sixth with a time of 6:19.711. The Engineers finished just a few seconds faster than Rutgers University's time from the first heat. Tech competed again later on in the day, improving to a 6:09.219 to take fifth.

Racing in the last of three heats, the MIT Varsity 8 crew took sixth with a time of 5:52.783, coming in less than two seconds behind the College of the Holy Cross in 5:50.224. The Cardinal and Gray also finished over 10 seconds ahead of Rutgers, which raced in the first heat. Getting to race again later that afternoon, Tech took fifth in 5:53.086. Georgetown University finished just ahead of the Engineers with its 5:46.524, while Rutgers claimed sixth in 6:00.639.

MIT was just one of four crews competing in the Varsity 4, racing from lane one. The Engineers finished in third place with a time of 7:20.177. Harvard University took first in 7:06.195, Yale University was second with a 7:20.702 and Holy Cross finished in fourth with a time of 7:33.818.

MIT will end the 2013-14 season next weekend when it travels to New Jersey to take part in the 118th annual IRA Regatta on Mercer Lake from Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1.
