Lightweight Varsity 8 Defeats Top-Ranked D3 Openweight Crew Bates To Lead The Engineers on Saturday


- Location: Boston, Mass. (Charles River) 

- The Lead: In the spring opener for the MIT women's lightweight crew team, the Engineers picked up a victory in varsity 8 competition against the top-ranked D3 openweight crew from Bates to lead the team on the Charles River on Saturday. Overall, the Engineers rowed three varsity 8 boats in the regatta that took place in a 5-8 mph headwind with some gusts.


- In the varsity 8 boat, the Engineers defeated the top-ranked Bates College openweight crew by a 3.337-second margin to cross in 7:35.424. MIT's varsity 8 boat is ranked No. 6 in the nation in the latest USRowing Division 1 Collegiate Poll, while Bates is the No. 1 ranked openweight program in the nation in Division III. In that race, the Engineers led from the outset, moved out to an open water lead in the middle thousand and held off Bates over the final 500. Simmons finished third in the race as their crew crossed in 8:15.925.

- In the second varsity 8 race, the Engineers got off the line with speed but could not hold off Bates in the second thousand meters as the team was second in 7:39.921. Bates took the race in 7:23.075, while Simmons was third in 8:01.248.

- In the third varsity 8 competition, the crew of novice and experienced rowers rowed an aggressive, clean race to cross in second in a time of 8:14.6.

- MIT returns to action on the Charles River on Saturday, April 7th as the Engineers host Wellesley, Williams and Wesleyan. In the Division III openweight rankings, Wesleyan is currently No. 2 while Williams is No. 3 and Wellesley is No. 9.
