Women's Lightweight Crew Shines at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia


- Location: Philadelphia, Pa. (Schuykill River)

- The Lead: The MIT lightweight women's rowing team had an outstanding weekend at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday and Saturday as the team won medals in the Collegiate Double, and Lightweight Four and finished fifth in the Varsity Heavyweight Eight.


- In the Collegiate Double openweight event, the pairing of freshmen Sophie Anderson (Seattle, Wash.) and Sophie Herscovici (Brookline, Mass.) placed fifth, of twenty-one, in their time trial and then second in their semifinal to move onto the grand final on Saturday. In the Grand Final, the crew raced to finish third in a time of 7:49.767.  The crew finished ahead of BU, Brock and Oklahoma City University to earn the bronze medal.  The MIT "B" Pairs crew was second in the Third Final as they crossed in 8:29.604 and held off South Florida.

- In the Lightweight 4 event for the Robert Espeseth Trophy, the crew earned the program's first-ever silver medal with a time of 7:34.457 to finish behind UC Berkeley in a hard-fought race. 

- In the Heavyweight Varsity 8 event, the Engineers were excellent throughout the weekend and qualified for the final to compete for the Evelyn Bergman Trophy. In the time trial, the crew posted the second fastest time of the morning of 6:14.084 in a field of eighteen crews, advancing to the afternoons semi-finals.  In their semifinal, the crew raced to a second place finish, earning a spot in the Grand Final.  In the Grand Final, MIT finished in 6:35.872 to grab fifth place.

- After a fourth-place finish in the Novice 4 heats, the team finished in fourth in the Petite Final on Saturday in a time of 8:12.471 to improve by nearly 13 seconds from earlier in the day.

- The Varsity Eight has moved up one spot in the latest USRowing Coaches Poll, taking over the No. 6 ranking
