MIT Wins Five Matches In NFC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's fencing team picked up right where it left off last season as it went unscathed in the opening weekend of Northeast Fencing Conference action. The Engineers posted victories over Boston University (23-4), Wellesley College (17-10), UMass-Amherst (24-3), University of New Hampshire (24-3), and Tufts University (19-8).

The epee team, comprised of Lele Yu, Mika Tomczak, Joanna Tong, and Nicole Koulisis, combined for a 39-6 ledger. Yu and Tomczak both posted marks of 12-1 as Tong finished with an 11-2 record. Koulisis contributed a total of 4-2 as MIT had three 8-1 wins on the day in addition to a sweep of UNH.

Drew Reese anchored the sabre squad with a 14-1 performance while Shauna Jin notched a 13-2 record. Yushin Chen won all three of her bouts as Lynn Wang had a solid showing with a 6-6 mark. For the day, the team totaled a 36-9 ledger.

Nancy Hua led the foil team with a 12-3 mark en route to a 32-14 squad total. Gemma Mendel notched a 9-3 ledger as Barrette Strickland went 9-5. Chun Li closed out the scoring with a 2-2 record.
