Cambridge, Mass. (May 19) -- As part of a series that is taking place throughout the 2020-21 academic year, the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) is featuring a number of coaches and DAPER staff members to learn more about them. This next installment of the series features Becca Shaw, who is in her second year as the Special Assistant to the Athletic Director/Department Head and her seventh season as an assistant with the Field Hockey program.
As part of each feature, we have included a written question and answer session, along with a video interview where recruits, alumni, fans and others can learn more about the MIT staff. If you can't currently visit MIT, we will bring MIT to you!
How do you relax when you aren’t at MIT?
I like taking walks along the Charles River. I live pretty close to the river, so it’s been a great way to disconnect from work especially in this remote environment when it could blend together. I recently picked up golf and play in a women’s league which has also been a great way to relax and have fun.
If you could go on vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Oh this is a tough one, I feel that a lot of folks are likely thinking about this question as things start to open up. I really would like to visit Japan. I was supposed to go in April of 2020 with my brother and I’m really looking forward to getting there someday with him!
What is the best advice you've ever received?
I have two that come to mind! The first one is from Cheryl Silva and the advice was “you can’t make everyone happy; you aren’t pizza”. No explanation needed, but it is a good reminder that there are only so many things that you can control. The second was from my first boss right after graduating college. She said always take your birthday off, so no one tells you what to do on your birthday!
What is your favorite spot around campus?
Jack Barry Field, of course! I’ve probably spent the majority of my time at MIT on it over the years. The sunsets over Simmons are a perfect way to end the day.
What is your favorite restaurant around Cambridge or Boston?
Pammy’s on Mass Ave in Cambridge is amazing and everyone should try their Bolognese. Second, would be Painted Burro in Davis Square for their nachos. I dream about both!
What is your own favorite memory of being a student-athlete?
Ahh, making me nostalgic? My senior field hockey season was pretty epic. We started locker room dance parties before games that fired us all up and really set the tone for the success we had and the comradery that we built over the season. We lost in the conference final, but received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where we ended up beating both conference rivals, Amherst and Bowdoin. We ended up losing to TCNJ in the final, but had a great run.
If you weren't working in Athletics, what would be your dream career?
A neonatal nurse!
