Women's Lacrosse Rallies to Defeat Johnson & Wales, 11-10

THE BASICS:

- The Lead: The MIT women's lacrosse team rattled off seven unanswered goals during the final 10:23 of regulation, including senior Christine Noh's (La Canada, Calif.) game-winner with 8.8 seconds left, to capture an 11-10 come-from-behind victory over Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday. Junior Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.) tallied four goals and one assist for the Engineers while Maria Patane paced the Wildcats with three goals and one assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Patane connected on a pass from Kathy Ensor to open the scoring after 43 seconds expired. Almost 10 minutes later, first-year Eva Then (Yarmouth, Maine) redirected a feed from classmate Ali Hoffman (Port Washington, N.Y.) to tie the game. JWU replied with quick strikes from Marley Medina and Dani Lydecker, taking a 3-1 lead at the 18:12 mark.

- Then cut MIT's deficit in half a minute later, however, the Wildcats generated three straight goals. Juliana Giello found the back of the net twice while Patane earned a goal and an assist, helping the visitors build a 6-2 advantage with 11:29 on the clock. A defensive battle ensued until a solo blast by first-year Shannon Wing (Westford, Mass.) with 38 seconds remaining before halftime.

- Like the first half, Patane provided the first goal in the second stanza, burying a free-position shot. Hoffman quickly scored but JWU responded with three consecutive goals, establishing a 10-4 lead at the 13:09 mark. Goals by Allison Pazienski sandwiched one by Medina while Lydecker earned assists on the second and third markers.

- The Engineers slowly mounted their game-ending rally with Higuchi being a factor in the first four goals. She began with back-to-back goals, found Hoffman for a man-up strike with 3:47 left, and followed this up with a free-position goal 43 seconds later.

- After an exchange of possessions, first-year Naomi Lutz (Northbrook, Ill.) buried a free-position shot with 54 seconds remaining. Wing won the draw, which eventually led to Higuchi recording the equalizer with 25 seconds to go. Wing once again came up with the draw and after a foul by the Wildcats, she passed the ball to Lutz who found Noh in front of the net for the game-winning goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Hoffman tallied two goals, one assist, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers while Lutz posted one goal, two assists, and three groundballs. Then finished with two goals and four draw controls as Wing recorded six draw controls and three groundballs. Sophomore Allison Pinto (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and first-year Katie Pelton (Wayne, Pa.) both produced three groundballs and two caused turnovers while junior Leah Vogel (Houston, Texas) generated three caused turnovers. In net, sophomore Hannah Adams (McLean, Va.) totaled 11 saves and three groundballs.

- Pazienski notched two goals and one assist as Lydecker registered one goal and two assists. Madeline Bishara generated six groundballs, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers while Giello had two goals and three caused turnovers. Deja Hursey posted three caused turnovers and three groundballs as Cassidy O'Hara collected 12 saves and four groundballs.

- JWU led the way in shots (30-29) and groundballs (29-25) but MIT had the upper hand in shots on goal (23-21) and draw controls (15-8).

- The Engineers were 17-of-27 during their clearing attempts and went 2-of-7 in free-position attempts.

- The Wildcats were 18-of-25 during their clearing attempts and converted one of their four free-position shots.

- This was the first meeting in program history for both teams.

UP NEXT:

- MIT will travel to nationally-ranked No. 3 Middlebury College on Thursday, April 4 for a 5:00 p.m. game. JWU, meanwhile, resumes GNAC play on Saturday, April 6 when it hosts Emmanuel College at 3:00 p.m.
