Zhou Leads Women's Swimming and Diving on Opening Night of 2018 Winter Invite


Event: 2018 MIT Winter Invitational

Results: 2nd of 8 (256 points) - After Day One

Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool) 

The Lead: Led by a first-place finish on the 1-meter board by junior diver Blake Zhou (Palo Alto, Calif.), the No. 8 MIT women's swimming and diving team stands second of eight teams after the opening session of the 2018 MIT Winter Invitational. On top of the 1-meter dive, the Engineers competed in the 1650-free and the 800-free relay.

After tonight's session, MIT is in second place with 256 points only behind Tufts University, which has 288 points. RPI is in third with 107 points, Simmons College is in fourth with 106 points, Wheaton is in fifth with 77 points, Wellesley is in sixth with 55 points, Bowdoin, which only sent its divers to the Invite, is seventh with 28 points and Keene State College is eighth with 23 points.


- The meet began with the 800 free relay which saw the "A" squad of Hannah Mahaffey (Lawrenceville, Ga.)Shannon Hagmaier (Longwood, Fla.)Jennifer Yu (Pearland, Texas)and Laura Rosado (New Haven, Conn.)finish as the runner-up in a time of 7:39.51. 

- They were followed by the "C" relay team of Katharine Pan (Ann Arbor, Mich.)Jasmin Bouzarouata (Astoria, N.Y.)Alexandrine Obrand (Westmount, Quebec) and Emily Yuan (Newbury Park, Calif.), which finished fourth in 7:48.30. The Engineers "B" relay team comprised of Lilia Staszel (Brighton, Mich.)Kayla Holman (Menlo Park, Calif.)Delaney Burns (Scituate, Mass.) and Ashley Pearson (Stafford, Va.) finished fifth in 7:49.21.

- In the 1650-free, the Engineers saw a pair of student-athletes compete as Addie Chambers (Seattle, Wash.) finished fourth with a time of 17:51.67, while Audrey Gaither (Ross, Calif.) touched the wall 12th in 18:58.54.

- In the diving well, MIT took four of the top five places in the field of 22 divers. Zhou took first with a six-dive score of 309.00, Deborah Wen (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished second with a score of 285.75, Dolly Payne (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took fourth with 254.30 points and Morgan Matranga (Moraga, Calif.) finished fifth with a score of 233.65. Additionally, Isabel Rosa (Lake Bluff, Ill.) was able to finish eighth with a collegiate-best score of 213.25 and Bethany Moore (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took tenth with 191.65 points.


- The Engineers return to the pool tomorrow morning for the second day of the 2018 MIT Winter Invitational. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. and finals will start at 6:00 p.m. Events scheduled for tomorrow include the 200-free relay, 200-fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, 400-IM, 50-free, 400-medley relay, women's 3-meter diving and men's 1-meter diving.
