MIT Rolls Past Simmons

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was senior day for the MIT women's tennis team today and the Engineers marked the occasion with a convincing 9-0 win over visiting Simmons College. One of MIT's seniors, Anastasia Vishnevetsky (Orange, Conn.) won both her singles and doubles matches for the Engineers. Hillary Jenny (Green Bay, Wis.) and Alexandria Hall (Hemet, Calif.) were the other MIT seniors honored before the match.

MIT (10-6) was in control in the doubles matches, winning at No. 3 by an 8-0 score and at No. 2, 8-2. The closest of the matches came at No. 1 where the MIT team of sophomores Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) took down the Simmons (12-5) team of junior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.), 8-3.

Vishnevetsky collected her singles win in the No. 1 position where she defeated Salmela, 6-4, 6-3. Quisenberry played at No. 2 in the singles matches and was a straight sets winner as well, downing Bodeck by a 6-1, 6-3 score. Hsu dropped only three games in her 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 over freshman Kristi Mielbye (Hanson, Mass.).

In the closest match of the day freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and her opponent, sophomore Andreé Simé (Bradenton, Fla.) split the first two sets of the No. 3 match before Dutt picked up the win in a closely contested third set to take the match, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. In the Nos. 5 and 6 matches the Engineers fought off challenges from the Sharks in each before coming out on top. Freshman Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) took the No. 5 contest, 6-0, 7-5 over sophomore Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.), while Jenny took a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 over sophomore Erin Fontaine (Cohasset, Mass.).

MIT will play its last home match of the season on April 18 when it hosts Brandeis University at 4:00 p.m.. Simmons will play next at Clark University on April 20 at 4:00 p.m.
