Boston, Mass. (September 26) -- MIT women's tennis players Lara Rakocevic (Portland, Ore.) and Kelly Zhu (Pearland, Texas) were both honored by the NEWMAC office on Monday afternoon. Rakocevic picked up her first career Player of the Week honors, while Rakocevic and Zhu teamed up to earn Doubles Team of the Week accolades.
Rakocevic continued her solid rookie season as she the lone NEWMAC player to advance to the final eight of the ITA New England Regional Championship over the weekend in the three-day tournament hosted by MIT. She knocked off the No. 7 and No. 9 seeded players in the tournament, while also picking up a straight-set win over Babson last week that helped the Engineers take sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Rakocevic and Zhu picked up their first doubles award after an 8-0 shutout win at No. 2 doubles vs. Babson and a performance at the ITA's that saw the duo advance to the round of 16. The pair was the lone NEWMAC team to advance to the second round after a convincing 8-1 victory in the first round.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, September 27th as MIT travels to Clark for a 4 p.m. start in Worcester, Mass.
