Tabunshchyk, Matsuzaki Lead NEWMAC Women's Tennis All-Conference Performers

Cambridge, Mass. (May 9) -- Six members of the MIT women's tennis team have been named as New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference performers, as voted by the league's nine head coaches. In addition, first-year Viktoriya Tabunshchyk (Ancaster, Canada) was named as the Rookie of the Year and head coach Carol Matsuzaki earned Coach of the Year honors for the fifth straight season and 10th time overall.

Tabunshchyk led five Engineers who were named to the singles First Team as she was the top choice at No. 2 singles. Overall, she recorded a 12-3 record including a 9-2 mark at No. 2 and a 6-0 record in conference matches.

In doubles, the duo of Tabunshchyk and sophomore Libby Rickeman (Wayzata, Minn.) were the No. 1 First Team choice with a 15-4 overall record and another perfect 8-0 NEWMAC slate. This is the second career First Team doubles honor for Rickeman as she was also named to the Second Team at No. 1 singles.

Junior captain Lara Rakocevic (Portland, Ore.) earns her third First Team singles honor of her career as she was the selection at No. 3 following a 15-5 record in singles and a perfect 8-0 record in NEWMAC play. First-year Ashley Teng (Tustin, Calif.) was First Team at No. 4 singles with a 7-0 league record and Rakocevic and Teng were First Team honorees at No. 3 doubles. For the season, the pair went 11-4 overall with a 7-1 NEWMAC doubles record.

Sophomore Megan Guenther (Willowbrook, Ill.) is a member of All-Conference First Team for the second straight season as she went 16-3 overall and recorded a 7-0 NEWMAC record. At No. 5, she was 8-1 in total and has won four straight matches. 

At No. 6 singles, sophomore Vanessa Kitova (Beverly, Mass.) was named to the All-Conference First Team for the first time in her career as she went 8-1 for the season and picked up a 6-0 NEWMAC record. Over her first two season, Kitova boasts a NEWMAC record of 10-0 in singles play.

Matsuzaki, the 2018 ITA Division III National Coach of the Year, is in her 21 at the helm for the Engineers. A two-time regional Coach of the Year, her teams have compiled an overall dual match record of 277-121 while making appearances in the NCAA Elite Eight in 2015 and 2018.

MIT opens NCAA Tournament play on Saturday, May 11th as the Engineers will take on the winner of SUNY New Paltz/Husson in the second round beginning at 10:30 a.m. The regional is taking place at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
