Women’s Volleyball Blanks LeTourneau and Willamette at Spike It Up Classic

- The Lead: During the opening day of the Spike It Up Classic hosted by Colorado College, the MIT women's volleyball team defeated LeTourneau University (25-14, 25-12, 25-23) and Willamette University (25-19, 26-24, 25-19) on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH ONE vs. LeTourneau:

- Set 1: After conceding the opening point, MIT won the next eight before recording a 25-14 win.

- Set 2: The Engineers rattled off nine straight points, helping them build an 18-4 lead en route to a 25-12 victory.

- Set 3: Trailing 11-6, MIT went on an 8-3 run to tie things up at 14. LeTourneau won the next four points, however, the Engineers responded with a 10-4 run, reaching match point on a kill by senior Alexis Groark (Elwood, N.Y.). A ball-handling error brought the Yellowjackets within 24-23, but another Groark kill sealed the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Groark finished with 12 kills and a .375 hitting performance while first-year Lilly Edwards (Kansas City, Mo.) produced 12 kills and six blocks.

- Senior Shea Landeene (Phoenix, Ariz.) tallied nine kills, a .412 hitting percentage, and six blocks as sophomore Nikasha Patel (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) contributed eight kills.

- Junior Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) generated 38 assists and 12 digs while senior Madison Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) and junior Francesca Macchiavello (Lexington, Ky.) recorded 17 and nine digs, respectively.

- This was the first meeting between both programs.

HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Willamette:

- Set 1: After a series of runs by both teams, Willamette held a 19-17 lead. A pair of hitting errors fueled an 8-0 run which was capped by back-to-back blocks by Maloney and Landeene that clinched the come-from-behind win.

- Set 2: The second set featured 16 ties and five lead changes. A kill by sophomore Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) gave MIT set point at 24-22. A kill and an ace kept the Bearcats alive, however, an Edwards kill coupled with a hitting error clinched the victory.

- Set 3: Following six ties and a lead change, the Engineers put together an 8-3 run which resulted in a 21-16 advantage. An exchange of points ensued until a Groark kill and then a block by junior Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.) and Groark captured the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Edwards paced MIT with 11 kills while Groark posted nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage.

- Maloney totaled 34 assists, six digs, and two blocks.

- Lee led the Engineers with 13 digs as Landeene generated five blocks.

- This was the first meeting between both programs.

- MIT concludes the Spike It Up Classic on Saturday when it plays the University of La Verne at 4:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. Mountain) and nationally-ranked No. Colorado College at 8:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Mountain).
