Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Smith and Framingham State

- The Lead: The MIT women's volleyball team overpowered NEWMAC rival Smith College (25-12, 25-11, 25-11) and local foe Framingham State University (25-10, 25-12, 25-6) in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The wins lifted the Engineers' record to 12-2 on the year and 2-0 in conference play.


- Set 1: MIT won six out of the first seven points but Smith battled back, tying the score at eight courtesy of Claire Cicchetti's ace. A serving miscue by the Pioneers sparked a 17-4 run which was capped by a kill from junior Emily Condon (Orange, Calif.).

- Set 2: Smith held a 4-1 edge after a kill from Evi Evgeniou. A kill by senior Alexis Groark (Elwood, N.Y.) kicked off a five-point burst which put the Engineers ahead for good and helped them capture a 25-11 win.

- Set 3: MIT raced out to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back as Groark's kill secured another 25-11 victory.


- Groark led all players with 11 kills and hit .435 as first-year Alyssa Unell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) produced eight kills, two aces, and two blocks.

- Junior Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 25 assists in helping MIT hit .402 for the match.

- Senior Madison Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) collected a match-high 16 digs while junior Francesca Macchiavello (Lexington, Ky.) recorded seven digs and four aces.

- First-year Sofie Kupiec (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) contributed seven digs and two aces as sophomore Hannah Grupe (Oakwood, Ohio) bolstered the defense with two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED – MATCH TWO vs. Framingham State:

- Set 1: After a back-and-forth start to the set, a kill by Maloney fueled a 21-6 run as back-to-back aces from sophomore Julia Caravias (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) clinched the 25-10 win.

- Set 2: MIT recorded the first five points of the set before going on to post a 25-12 victory.

- Set 3: The Engineers built a 9-1 advantage and then cruised to a 25-6 win.


- Unell posted eight kills, a .727 hitting percentage, and four aces while Grupe chipped in eight kills and two blocks.

- Groark and sophomore Annie Bryan (Kirkwood, Mo.) both had seven kills as Maloney totaled 24 assists, six digs, and three aces.

- Macchiavello notched six digs while Caravias earned four aces.

- As a team, the Engineers had a .540 hitting percentage.


- MIT will travel to nationally-ranked No. 4 Johnson & Wales University for a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6:00 p.m.
